ReSkate on Linux and Steam Deck: Proton Setup

ReSkate runs on Linux through Steam Proton with one launch option. This guide shows the setup and what the project has actually tested.

Linux (Proton) setup

  1. Install skate. with Steam. Put ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll in a new, empty folder, for example ~/Games/ReSkate, not Steam's skate. folder.
  2. In Steam, open skate. → Properties → Launch Options and enter the command below with your own folder's path.
  3. Press Play on skate. in your library. The launcher installs its own copy of the game into that folder the first time.
bash -c 'exec "${@/*EAAntiCheat.GameServiceLauncher.exe//home/you/Games/ReSkate/ReSkateLauncher.exe}"' -- %command%

Why the launch option is needed

Steam starts EA's anti-cheat launcher, not Skate.exe, and the anti-cheat refuses to run under Proton. The launch option swaps it for ReSkate's launcher. Launching from the game's own Steam entry keeps skate.'s app ID and its Proton prefix.

What has been tested

  • ReSkate 1.1.3 with Proton Experimental on CachyOS: the launcher, server browser, joining a public server and hosting a lobby.
  • The launcher in a folder of its own is new and has not been tested on Proton yet.
  • Steam Deck should work the same way but is untested.
Known issue: if you load a custom map and then join a server on another map, the screen can stay black. Load the server's map first. See issue #31.

Hosting for others? The Linux dedicated server runs natively without Proton.
